“In Amador County of the Sierra Foothills, a little more than an hour from Sacramento, 45-minutes from Lodi, or two hours from Napa-Sonoma stands Shake Ridge Ranch, one of the vineyard treasures of California.
Shake Ridge Ranch grows a vine village covering more-than 46 acres with a plethora of grape varieties and growing styles. Ann Kraemer began planting the site in 2003 bringing with her extensive Napa Valley viticulture experience, and a rock-star portfolio of winemakers interested in working with any fruit she’d grow. As a result, the spot hosts numerous custom-developed-for-winemaker plantings, as well as variation like one fruit type grown in several different styles.

Shake Ridge is a vineyard that’s famous among winemakers, but not many people who aren’t winemakers know its name. That’s partly because it’s remote — nearly 2,000 feet up in the foothills of the Sierras — but who knows why else, because the grapes that proprietor Ann Kraemer grows here make exceptional wines.
The location was originally settled in the 1870s by Italian immigrants, who cultivated grapes (among other crops) to help feed mining camps; once the miners left the region, it reverted to pastureland for some eighty years, until the Kraemer family planted vines in 2003. —R.I.

Kraemer sees herself as the proprietor of a well-stocked art-supply house or spice shop, providing her clientele with the best provisions she can round up. “I’m giving them really good ingredients, like you see on those cooking shows everyone watches, like ‘Iron Chef,’” she says. “The contestants are given the same ingredients and they make completely different meals with those same ingredients. That’s what I think is so cool.”

Who is Olivia Brion and what is Cantadora?
Olivia Brion is a fictional character. If a wine brand was a historical fiction novel, Olivia Brion would be the main character in that novel. Each bottle of wine tells a different “chapter” of her story. Life being somewhat more surprising than fiction, the stories of Olivia Brion are inspired by the full lives of real trailblazing women from history.

Cantadora is the natural evolution of Olivia Brion. Where Olivia Brion focuses on stories from history, Cantadora features women from today, giving back to our shared community in exceptional ways.
We partner with the Cantadora women on the wines, commission a portrait from a local woman photographer, and give 10% of the sales back to the organization of the women’s choosing. These wines are rich and opulent like the incredible stories of the women on the labels.
